Background

Guru Nanak Nishkaam Keertan Academy (GNNKA) was founded by Honorary Captain Dalbir Singh upon retiring from the Indian Army after almost 30 years of service.  He was appalled and disheartened at seeing the plight of young people wasting their lives away through drug addiction or the limited access to education/skills to support them.  Determined to make a difference, Hon Capt Dalbir Singh set up GNNKA as a direct response to tackling these social problems.

The academy is open to all regardless of race/religion and services are free to attendees; in fact, the word Nishkaam derives from the Sikh ethos whose definition is performing a service without expectation of any reward.  GNNKA operates in India; and is wholly supported by Baba Jee and contributions from Sangat (Sikh congregation).

Under Baba Jee’s guidance and direction, the academy has made significant improvements and benefitted the lives of people who have accessed the academy’s services; resulting in better discipline; understanding of working as a team; and improved self-esteem as children have been invited on many stages across Punjab to perform Gurbani Keertan (classical Sikh music) to large congregations.

GNNKA’s Vision is to invest in and support the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit with a view to improving their conditions of life.

GNNKA Aims

The academy aims to achieve its vision by:

  1. Advancing the education of Gurbani Keertan in a Sikh ethos environment to all who are interested, but especially focussing on children and young people.
  2. Maintaining and operating sewing classes to skill-up those young women most-in-need, in the trade of sewing; so that they may increase their chances of employment or setup their own social enterprises.

GNNKA Objectives

  1. Awarding to such persons maintenance allowances to support the development of their music skills and/or sewing skills.
  2. Supporting charities and individuals who promote the education of Gurbani Keertan as a means to relieve drug addiction and join them with Gurbani Keertan.
  3. To act as a resource for providing advice, assistance and investment in social programmes which help people develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals.
